The healthiest diet, of course, is to eat a wide variety of foods including as many whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables as possible.  But, there are some foods that, through their chemical natures, are better at protecting the body from cancer.  This article identifies nine of these super-foods, the natural components found in them, and a simplified description of how these phytochemicals work their magic. Before we do that, however, two very important dietary rules for avoiding cancer must be mentioned:  low fat, high fiber.  A diet that is high in animal fats requires the body to release extra bile acids into the intestines during digestion.  The natural bacteria that live in our intestines react with these excess bile acids resulting in the creation of carcinogens.  Eating plenty of fiber keeps the intestines moving quickly, not allowing these carcinogens to cause damage before being eliminated from the body.  In addition, fiber in the intestines actually binds with the bile acids not allowing them to react with the natural bacteria.  The human body is constantly producing unstable molecules called oxidants.  You may have heard these oxidants referred to as free radicals.  Free radicals steal electrons from other molecules which damages the cell proteins and DNA of the original molecule.  This damage leaves the cell vulnerable to cancer.  The active chemicals in food, called phytochemicals, are anti-oxidants.  They search out the oxidants (free radicals) and prevent them from causing damage.  In some instances, phytochemicals can even repair damage already done.  Here’s how it works.BroccoliSulforaphane, found in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, boosts the body’s natural cancer fighting properties.  It does this by mobilizing special enzymes in the body called phase II detoxifying enzymes.  These enzymes neutralize cancer-causing agents before they can affect cells.  To receive the maximum benefit of sulforaphane, broccoli should be eaten raw.  Scientists recently discovered that broccoli sprouts contain levels of sulforaphane that are much, much higher than those found in mature broccoli.  You’ll be seeing a lot more broccoli sprouts on my sandwiches and salads!CarrotsAnother recent discovery in the science of plant chemicals is falcarinol found in carrots.  Falcarinol acts as a natural pesticide for the carrot while it is growing, keeping it protected from fungal diseases.  The exact mechanism that falcarinol uses to fight cancer is still unknown.Chili PeppersCapsaicin is the chemical in hot peppers that give them their bite.  At a cellular level, capsaicin induces a state called apoptosis in the cancer cells.  Apoptosis can be defined as programmed cell death.  You could say that it causes the cancer cell to commit suicide.GarlicGarlic contains a chemical allium, which works to increase activity of our body’s natural immune cells.  Allium also causes cells to become more vulnerable to stress created by the by-products of cell division.  Since cancer cells divide very rapidly, they are affected by allium more than normal cells, which divide much more slowly.NutsNuts are one of nature’s best sources of selenium.  Selenium has been shown to improve the efficiency with which DNA repairs itself after exposure to damaging free radicals.  Brazil nuts eaten from the shell are especially high in selenium.  In addition, nuts contain omega-3 fatty acid.  The omega-3 fatty acids block a protein that has been shown to increase sensitivity to carcinogens in laboratory studies.Red grapesAnthocyanins, found in dark red and purple foods, can reduce the growth of an enzyme, human DNA topoisomerase II, that triggers the growth of cancer cells in the human body.  Grape juice is an excellent source of anthocyanins.  Good news, read the labels of 100% fruit drinks and you are very likely to find grape juice.SoyThe phytochemical in soy, genistein, inhibits the growth of new blood vessels necessary for tumor survival.  Without these blood vessels, the tumor shrinks.  Soy also works to block bile acids.TeaAntioxidants in tea, catechins, appear to prevent cancer cells from dividing.  The phytochemical EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) present in green tea, binds to a protein found on tumor cells and dramatically slows their growth.TomatoesLycopene, a very powerful antioxidant, isn’t found in many other fruits and vegetables.  Lycopene stimulates the production of phase II detoxification enzymes which neutralize carcinogens and allow them to be excreted out of the body.  Processing tomatoes by turning them into sauce increases the levels of lycopene. So remember, choose vegetables fats over animal fats, pack your diet with a wide variety of fruits, vegetable and whole grains, and include the nine foods mentioned above often.  Live a long, healthy, happy life!

By now we know which products are good for us and which aren’t, or so I hope. For example, dark chocolate has now been proven to be great for you, and things like Ephedrine and ephedrine type products have been proven to do more harm than help. I don’t know about you but, I’m constantly looking for more things that are good tasting yet healthy for me to take. Recently I found a few products that are good both beneficial to your health, inexpensive, and they taste good, so I wanted to just share a few of these products with you along with some information about the products such as benefits, ingredients, and “in the news” type deals.
The Healthy Energy Drink by DrinkAct is located at CashPeter, this company was established in 2005 by Paul Gravette and Mark McKnight as a web-based energy drink company. DrinkAct is full of vitamins, sugarless, healthy and inexpensive. This product not only is an energy drink but also a weight loss type of drink. The main ingredient is Epigallocatchin gallate also known as EGCG which is a main ingredient in green tea, which is said to have antioxidant attributes which get rid of free radicals that cause cell damage. Also, because it has green tea in it this makes it naturally decaffeinated. See this drink doesn’t hop you up and then make you crash like other drinks, it efficiently increases your energy without all the nasty side affects of other drinks. This product also contains guarana which is almost the same type of ingredient that is in chocolate. Needless to say this is the perfect drink if you’re looking to try something different but something that’s also going to benefit you health wise!
Stevia Drink Mix is placed as number two but a darn close number one. I have a personal love for Stevia it contains no sugar, zero calories, zero sugar, zero fat, no sodium and no carbs. Stevia is made from the Stevia plant which is known to be a beneficial natural food grade herb. It is hundreds of times sweeter than sugar, but does not adversely affect normal blood sugar levels. Of course it also doesn’t have anything beneficial necessarily but it does taste good it’s not bad for you like other sugary “health” drinks and it’s inexpensive. By the way sugary and health drinks? They shouldn’t even be in the same sentence! Ingredients for the Stevia drink include Citric Acid, Fumaric Acid, Stevia Rebaudiana (Bertoni), Tartaric Acid, Natural Flavorings, and Natural Color, nothing fake about this guy! Do some research on Stevia, so you can see the full benefits!
Fortune Delight is made without any sugar, artificial ingredients, isolated chemicals or sweetener of any kind. Fortune Delight is a flavorful replacement for sodas, sugary vitamin waters, and high caffeine energy drinks. Plus, this herbal formula enhances the benefits of drinking plain water with natural antioxidants from whole food ingredients. Unlike most fake, enhanced vitamin waters, with Fortune Delight you get vital nutrients from nature, not synthetic, isolated vitamins or minerals manufactured in a lab. Natural antioxidants, like those in Fortune Delight, help the body fight premature aging by absorbing free radicals that can cause cell damage as you get older.
So, those are my top threes. I can’t possibly be sure if I would even add more to the list, simply because I know the drinks listed above very well. The first one got awesome reviews and is a true health drink. The Stevia one in general got good reviews but Stevia has been a product known to people for a long time that don’t want to use unhealthy refined sugars but want a sweet taste added to their drinks. And the fortune delight was actually recommended to me by the same person that recommended the Stevia product which was Dr. Young who makes the super greens (also an amazing product). Now as always you can view reviews online by simply checking out your favorite search engine and doing a product search. Be wary when you do this, however, because everyone is competition against everyone else. Use common sense where you can. If 500 people say type A drink is healthful and 1 person says it’s not, who do you think is the honest participant?!?

The emerging market for products claiming to slow aging is undeniably astounding. Among these, supplements containing antioxidants perhaps give the best promises to the consumers. Aside from the fact that these are a wound to the pocket, antioxidant products offer a delight to those who would like to look young in a flash. But how does this free-radical sponge really work?
Free Radicals Defined
First identified by Moses Gomberg in 1900, free radicals are molecular species that are highly reactive. These tiny things play a role in chemical reactions including that of the human. As the cells produce energy (for function and survival), the also create oxygen molecules that are unstable because its electrons are unpaired. These unpaired electrons make this thing to be highly labile.
In the human body, if these unstable molecules go together with other molecules, they would kill their newly acquainted fellows, thereby speeding up the aging process. Drinking, the radiation coming from TVs and computers, drugs, and cigarette smoking spawn free radicals. If we persistently have stress and do not take them away by way of exercise, we give way to the formation of free radicals. If we don’t have a good sleep at least seven hours, we are actually exciting production of more fee radicals.
A lot of changes in our body are as a result of the activities of the free radicals. They damage the DNA and impair other vital functions of cells, causing premature death to these cells. Over time, all these damages would mount up and cause our body to accelerate aging.
Upon breathing, oxygen induces a process called oxidation. And it is in here where free radicals form. This process is likened to the oxidation of metals. Once oxidized, aluminum turns to be white, iron becomes rusty, and copper transforms into green. In the same logic that oxidation damages metals; free radicals are also detrimental to our body.
How Antioxidants Work
Antioxidants are molecules that have the capability of preventing oxidation of other molecules (by the name itself: antioxidant). In the light of anti-aging, antioxidants prevent the formation of free radicals. Antioxidants are naturally occurring substances found in plants. If our body has an abundance of antioxidants, we will be able to prevent the harm brought about by free radicals.
Benefits of Antioxidants
Antioxidants can help you look younger, live longer, and be at your optimum health. Foods rich in antioxidants like fruits and vegetables can give you great protection from coronary heart diseases, and age-related diseases like Alzheimer’s disease.Antioxidants can also strengthen our immune resistance to diseases such as influenza and other bacterial and viral infections.
These substances also reduce a person’s risk of acquiring cancer, an incurable disease. Antioxidants also prevent glaucoma and the age-related degeneration of our macula, the part of the eye that is dedicated for superior acuity vision. Antioxidants also beat down the passing of the aging clock making your skin and other organs rejoice.
Carotenoids, zinc, selenium, and the Vitamins A, C, and E are some of the main antioxidants. Glutathione is said to be the most powerful among all forms of antioxidants. They are naturally present in our body since we were young but depletes as we get older.
If antioxidant supplements are not your type, you may take some delectable bite of the super fruits such as blueberry and raspberry which are said to contain the most number of antioxidants.
So now that you have understood well how these miracle supplements work, you would realize why these wonder tablets cost a lot. May you have a healthily long and young life!

Whether you are a fan of vegetables and super foods or not it is essential that you include them in your diet. There are a number of benefits to including these healthy foods into your daily diet. Super foods are packed with nutrients and contain vitamins, minerals, and many other nutrients. Here are 7 healthy super foods you should include in your diet.
1. Berries
Berries are toward the top of the list for healthy foods because they are packed with antioxidants to help protect the cells from damage. They also contain a great deal of Vitamin C and soluble fiber. A common worry with aging is short term memory loss, which blueberries can help prevent.
2. Broccoli
Broccoli is certainly not among the top of the list for many people when it comes to super green foods. But broccoli is one of the healthiest greens you should be including in your diet. It is excellent at helping prevent cancer and is great for boosting your immune system. This can help you fight off the common cold and stay healthy.
3. Garlic
Although garlic often gets overlooked, numerous studies have shown that a regular consumption of garlic can lower our blood pressure. On top of lowering our blood pressure, it also prevents the blood from being overly sticky and decreases the LDL cholesterol. While LDL is the bad cholesterol, it helps increase the good cholesterol, HDL cholesterol.
4. Spinach
Spinach is another super green food that may not taste the best but is something you definitely want to include in your daily diet. Lutein is one of the best foods for preventing cataracts, which is a large part of spinach. Another benefit to spinach is that lutein helps prevent age related macular degeneration, which is the leading cause of preventable blindness.
5. Tomatoes
Tomatoes are something that taste good and are extremely healthy for you. There are high levels of lycopene, which is a powerful antioxidant to help protect the cells in our bodies from damage.
6. Turkey
Turkey is among the top meats you will want to include in your diet. It is one of the leanest protein foods and is low in calories. Another thing it contains is selenium, which has been found to inhibit cancer development, improve the immune system, and assist the metabolism.
7. Spirulina
This ancient blue green algae my look unappetizing but it packs a real nutritional punch. This microscopic food contains large amounts of protein, vitamins, mineral sand is easily absorbed for instant fuel. It is naturally low in fat and sugar and provides a large assortment of phytonutrients as well.
These are just a few of the best super foods you can and should include in your daily diet. You can benefit greatly from them by increasing your immune system, providing you with more energy, and preventing a number of diseases.

Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy: The Harvard Medical School Guide to Healthy Eating

Amazon.com Review

Aimed at nothing less than totally restructuring the diets of Americans, Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy may well accomplish its goal. Dr. Walter C. Willett gets off to a roaring start by totally dismantling one of the largest icons in health today: the USDA Food Pyramid that we all learn in elementary school. He blames many of the pyramid’s recommendations–6 to 11 servings of carbohydrates, all fats used sparingly–for much of the current wave of obesity. At (more…)
